Óðinn’s projects usually have a strong connection to nature.
In 2006 the concept of nature and function was taken all the way with the implementation of a designer summerhouse, strategically located in nature.
The core idea was to build a simple sculpture that would catch the eye without overwhelming nature. It was clear from the beginning that the location would play a key role on the final result.
After months of research, Ásabraut 1 in Grímsnes was selected for the location. Based on a 6000m2 land in the south of Iceland.
Einar Ólafsson (www.arkiteo.is) was nominated as architect and the outcome of the partnership with Einar is a simple and yet very functional house. The final look of the house is yet to come out.
In the initial design the house exterior was to be covered with corrugated aluminium, however further work and design has lead to the conclusion of now using NeoBond cassettes for the exterior on 3 sides of the property and Ceder wood on the forth side.
The original architecture design was built on simple and strait lines, with a roofed deck in the south side of the house. This looked promising at first, but after spending a considerable time around the Ásabraut property in the countryside when building the house, in all kind of possible whether condition during the winter time, it got quite clear that a deck surrounding the house would be necessary. This bigger deck would giving the future owner the freedom of moving the barbeque activity on all sides of the house by following the best whether conditions.
Because of the location of the house, on the edge of the hill, it came clear that the deck would need to be surrounded with some-kind of railing/fence, at least on the steep side.
It has been made sure that the fence would not disturb the simplicity of the house and the view out of the windows. Óðinn’s Design utopia in material choice on this front is to use hardened glass fence on the edge of the deck on 3 sides or as a second choice a horizontal Stainless steel wire fence.
To have the option of using the glass, the intention is to make the structure of the deck out of galvanized steel beams. It will make the deck stiffer and at the same time it will simplify the way the glass can be fastened on the edge of the steel beam.
Future owner of the property will also have several choices for locating an outside spa/hotpot. Tactical location has been identified on the front deck where the stunning view of nature can be experienced. But another good option is to have it located in the hollow in front of the sumerhouse .
These notes above are only a tiny top of the iceberg examples of all the engineering and design assessment that have been taken into account during the last one year of development of this unique property in the Icelandic nature!
